Four students from Southwest High School were each awarded a $2,500 scholarship through the annual Broadway Bank Scholarship program, in collaboration with the San Antonio Education Partnership (SAEP). The program honors Col. Charles E. Cheever, the founder of Broadway Bank and his wife, Betty Cheever, who in addition to serving on the bank’s board of directors, worked as a kindergarten teacher.

Broadway Bank awarded the students, Estefany Esparza Gutierrez, Deyanira Espino, Kennedy Rodriguez and Ximena Ruiz scholarships at a campus ceremony at Southwest High School. This scholarship program provides educational opportunities for high school seniors in San Antonio. The students were selected based on SAEP criteria of a 95 percent attendance rate and a B average.

“Broadway Bank is proud to recognize these students who have earned an opportunity to impact their communities and excel in life. We believe there is no greater investment than helping students pursue their goals for a brighter future,” said Jeannette Flores Westbrook, senior vice president, director of Community Reinvestment.

Along with SAEP executive director Adriana Contreras, Ph.D., each of the students took a moment to thank Broadway Bank for having faith in them and helping them in their path to higher education.

When a student receives a scholarship, it extends beyond its monetary value. With it comes the message that someone believes in them and is supporting their academic goals. That sense of confidence and community is invaluable, and we are pleased to be collaborating with Broadway Bank to invest in these students’ lives. We are proud of the students and their accomplishments.Through this partnership, we have the ability to help them achieve their dreams,” said Contreras.

The goal of SAEP is to close the college graduation gap for San Antonio by helping students graduate from high school, enroll in college and earn a college degree and/or certificate. SAEP runs Café College which serves as a one-stop-shop for college access workshops, advice and guidance.
