The San Antonio Education Partnership (SAEP), a local nonprofit that assists students to and through college, is excited to announce that 2019 marks the 30th anniversary of the organization providing free college access resources, opportunities, and services to the community. Over the past 30 years, SAEP has helped increase educational attainment within San Antonio through its four programs; cafécollege, Road to Success, SAEP Scholarship and Upgrade.
The partnership was created in 1989 to give at-risk students the knowledge to successfully navigate the process of enrolling and completing in post-secondary studies, by Mayor Henry Cisneros and other education innovators representing local businesses, school districts, colleges and, universities.
Since its founding, SAEP’s Road to Success program has grown to provide year-around guidance to students at 29 high schools. In 2010, SAEP began the operation of cafécollege, a community advising center, which has served over 70,000 students. Upgrade, launched in 2017, a program that supports working adults who have some college credit return to school and complete their degree, was awarded the Center of Excellence designation from The Graduate! Network. In addition, SAEP in partnership with the City of San Antonio awards $2.1 million in scholarships to students each year. Thanks to SAEP's services, 23,000 students have received a college credential, over 80 percent of those students are the first in their families to go to college.
SAEP will celebrate their 30th anniversary at the “Making the Grade” luncheon on Wednesday, May 29 at the McNay Art Museum’s Leeper Auditorium from 12 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. The luncheon will feature students who have benefited from SAEP’s services and programs, including keynote speaker, Greg Pardo. Pardo is a 2001 graduate from Memorial High School and SAEP scholarship recipient. The Valero Energy Foundation is the signature supporter for the event. In addition, Broadway Bank will be presenting a student with a $10,000 scholarship during the event.. Tickets for the luncheon are sold out, however, supporters are encouraged to help fund future college graduates by making a donation on the partnership’s website at www.saedpartnership.org.
