Summer Intern Spotlight
Broadway Bank offers a paid internship program that provides experiential learning opportunities to college students who have professional goals and seek exposure to a desired area of study.
“One of the things we do best is provide a rotational approach to allowing our interns to observe how several departments, not just their own, interact to support the company’s strategic priorities,” said Chelsea Weld, Assistant Vice President and Talent Acquisition Officer at Broadway Bank. “I’m very proud of the program our organization has developed because it provides students with a realistic job preview and allows Broadway Bank an opportunity to invest in our future workforce.”
This summer, Broadway Bank welcomed three students to intern in various departments around our headquarters in San Antonio, Texas. To celebrate National Intern Day in July, we want to introduce our three talented interns: Ava Cianelli, Kevin Jackson and Jazelynn Montemayor.
Meet Ava Cianelli, Broadway Bank’s Finance Department summer intern. Ava is from San Antonio and is a student at The University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona studying both finance and entrepreneurism. By interning with the finance department, Ava has learned the importance of being prepared and curious when assessing company profitability. She has been able to work alongside some of the best in the business to better understand the fundamentals of finance and revenue validation. “I have learned how to be comfortable with being uncomfortable,” said Ava. “As a natural introvert, I often do a lot of listening before sharing my thoughts. However, the bankers I’ve learned from here at Broadway Bank have empowered me to speak up and ask questions. They made me feel very welcomed and I am truly appreciative of this experience.” Ava had the opportunity to assist the finance team on profitability reports that directly impact the bank’s reporting processes.
Meet Kevin Jackson, Broadway Bank’s Commercial Credit Department summer intern. Kevin is from Oakdale, Tennessee, and is a student at Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi where he is pursuing a degree in finance with a minor in accounting. A large project Kevin has worked on during his internship is the auditing process of all critical third-party relationships and service providers that support Broadway Bank. He was able to analyze and spread financials, while also performing written analyses of those vendors. Kevin will present his findings to department leadership at the end of his internship. One of his favorite parts of the internship program has been experiencing the Broadway Bank culture and seeing first-hand how the bank’s first-class customer service is about treating all customers and employees like family. “I wasn’t very well versed in the banking industry before my internship. Now I see all the exciting career opportunities that are available at Broadway Bank,” said Kevin. “I have enjoyed immersing myself in the Broadway Bank culture, and I am looking forward to hopefully becoming a full-time Broadway Banker after graduation.” Overall, Kevin has used his time in the Broadway Bank internship program to learn about credit analysis and the commercial real estate development process, all skills he plans on incorporating into his collegiate studies and beyond.
Meet Jazelynn Montemayor, also a summer intern in the Broadway Bank Commercial Credit Department. Jazelynn is from San Antonio and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in finance at The University of Texas at San Antonio. Through her internship, Jazelynn has been able to gain exposure to career opportunities that finance majors have after graduation. By assisting the commercial credit team with annual review projects, Jazelynn has learned about the various aspects of working for a local, independent bank. “Thinking about the future can be scary and overwhelming. You find yourself feeling anxious about making career choices, finding employment opportunities and balancing adulthood. However, working at Broadway Bank turned my worries into confidence,” said Jazelynn. “I am incredibly grateful to Broadway Bank and its team of finance leaders that have trusted me with their industry insights. This has been a mentorship I will treasure for a lifetime.” Jazelynn says she has used her time wisely by focusing on her assignments and putting in the hours to better understand the subject matter and make sure she is making the best impression. Her commitment to the Broadway Bank internship program has been truly inspiring.
We're thankful for the positive impacts our internship program has on students, and on Broadway Bank, and we will watch their next steps with great interest.
