History of the Jack and Wm M. Light Charitable Trust

Jack and William “Bill” Light, fondly referred to as “The Light Brothers,” were born in the early 1900s and raised in San Antonio, Texas by their parents David Walker Light and Carrie Belle Montgomery Light. Jack made a career in finance/investments and never married nor had any children. Bill chose to become an attorney and even served as the assistant editor-in-chief of the “The San Antonio Light.” Bill married Margaret Sauer from New Braunfels and also had no children.

As third-generation Texans, they enjoyed hunting on the family property near Cotulla and traveling to North Texas to explore the natural habitats in this part of the state. Both were avid outdoorsmen and hunting was their preferred interest.

Both brothers lived a full life into their 80’s. Bill passed away on October 25, 1996 and Jack on August 20, 1997. The brothers had a strong desire to leave a lasting legacy, one that would help improve the lives of others, especially children. To fulfill their wishes, the Jack H. and Wm M. Light Charitable Trust was created.

The Jack H. & Wm M. Light Charitable Trust makes distributions on a semiannual basis. These grants are directed to 501(C)(3) organizations. The current emphasis is on the welfare of children in the broadest sense, with a primary interest in supporting organizations involved in the health, mental health and education of children, and having a direct impact principally in Harris County, Texas.
Deadline – March 31 and September 30
Decisions – April and October

Only requests submitted by the deadline will be considered. Requests submitted after the deadline must be resubmitted the following year.

To be considered for a grant you must submit a completed grant application online through the grant management portal.
