Joe and Sofia Regalado of Jarco Companies inspire entrepreneurs to persevere in the face of adversity.

Joe and Sofia went from digging up dirt in their backyard to starting a manufacturing business that serves clients across the state.

Joe and Sofia Regalado are the owners of Jarco Companies, a family of businesses prevalent in the mining and manufacturing industries that work with residential and commercial clients. As natural entrepreneurs, Joe and Sofia knew they wanted to build a company in Texas that helped their communities. But their journey from humble beginnings to a successful business venture wasn’t without its challenges. Throughout their story, Joe and Sofia leaned on each other in a unique partnership as both spouses and business partners and ultimately—with a little help from Broadway Bank—were able to turn their hardships into opportunities.

Both originally from Mexico, Joe and Sofia moved to the United States with their families when they were young children. Sofia moved to Texas at age 11 and worked inside a restaurant as a teen. Joe also moved to Texas at a young age, and when he turned 14, he worked in a local garage with his father and at a restaurant with his mother. It wasn’t until Joe and Sofia were young adults that fate stepped in, and they met in the restaurant where Sofia was a waitress. Their connection was instant and from there, their story of love and entrepreneurship began.

Joe started his business journey in the culinary world as a restaurant owner, using the knowledge he learned from his early years as a restaurant employee. A couple of years later, he shifted his focus from the restaurant business to the construction industry. Joe describes those early years as tough. “I wanted to provide my clients with the best materials; however, I didn’t have the transportation tools just yet to collect supplies from other areas of town. I remember experimenting in my backyard by digging up the dirt and testing it and screening it for quality. Who would have thought that the first dig in the backyard would lead to a family of businesses.”

After meeting Sofia, they developed an idea that catered to both their passions: helping the community and continuing in the construction industry. Together, they created Jarco Earthwerks, a trucking company aimed at assisting with hurricane clean-up efforts across the country.

Jarco’s journey to Broadway Bank

“I helped Joe start our company in 2007 and decided I would take care of our accounting and bookkeeping while also juggling a young family. In doing so, I learned the importance of balancing work and family,” shared Sofia.

“We struggled to get our business off the ground and overcame many hurdles to support our families and put food on the table. However, we remained persistent in reaching our goals. No matter how challenging the work got, we continued to put family first. Joe and I have similar spirits. We want to provide for our families as well as the families of our employees and our communities.”

“We assisted with hurricane clean-up efforts for two years and shortly after, we began to see some fruits of our labor. In 2009 we bought our first company truck, creating our second venture, Jarco Transport.”

Joe and Sofia’s grit and determination kept the company moving forward. Within the next 10 years, they would launch Jarco Companies and acquire three businesses allowing them to offer a larger variety of materials to their customers, such as topsoil, sand and gravel. Stop there? No way. Jarco Companies expanded their services yet again in 2021 by adding Readymix to their offerings.

“Donating to local organizations and nonprofits is important to us. We love being able to support the Somerset Little League, local cheer squads and the annual Somerset festival, just to name a few,” said Sofia.

“Showing appreciation to our employees is also an important value in our company culture,” added Joe. “At the end of every year, Sofia and I give bonuses to our employees so they can enjoy the holiday season. It warms our hearts to be able to share our blessings.”
